Cancer that is detected early can still be cured in many cases. That's why everyone should go for a cancer screening . The cytology assistant receives a tissue sample or a smear and can then use this to distinguish whether the cell tissue is suspicious or not. The working world of a cytology assistant consists of microscopes, dark room, slides and files. He creates the first findings and the attending physician then issues a cytodiagnosis.
At school, good grades should be achieved in the subjects chemistry (for an analysis of cell samples, body fluids and body secretions), physics (electrolyte measurements must be carried out), biology (cell metabolism, cell division and chromosome defects are recognized more quickly), mathematics (is used in training for percentage compositions of chemical compounds used) and Latin (medical terms are better understood). There is no legally defined school education, but the middle school certificate or the Abitur is preferred. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, neurology, chemistry, biology and physics should be brought along.
During the training, the following topics come into play: how is the human body structured, the processes of breathing, how are excretion and digestion carried out, tissue changes in various diseases, what happens during pregnancy and childbirth, how can a cancer cell be recognized and how Blood groups and blood sugar levels are determined. During the training period, several internships must be completed in a cytology laboratory and in a gynecological practice. The theoretical as well as the practical lessons take place at a cytology school. Since these schools only exist in a few cities, a move there cannot be ruled out for the trainee. During the internship, which lasts one year, the work takes place in a medical practice or a university clinic. The training lasts two years, in the first 12 months you learn about histology and microscopy in theory and in practice, the next 12 months are spent in various internships where you learn how cytological preparations work, archiving, billing and conducting investigations. No remuneration is paid for the entire duration of the training, but there are costs for specialist literature and work equipment, as well as for external accommodation.
The training ends with an internal examination. After successfully completing the exam, you will receive a certificate of completion. In order to be admitted to the exam, however, it is necessary to have attended all the lessons. Each exam consists of a written and a practical part. The topics can usually be determined by the trainees themselves. As a cytology assistant you apply in a cytology laboratory or in a larger gynecological practice , as well as in a medical research laboratory. Alternatively, the following professions can be considered: laboratory assistant, medical-technical assistant or radiology assistant. The salary in this job is between 2200 euros and 2480 euros gross . Prerequisites for good employment are, of course, completed training, good medical expertise, care and accuracy, reliability, commitment and independent work, technical understanding and memory and considerable manual dexterity.
