Viruses are infectious organic structures that, as virions, are spread outside of cells by passive transmission, but as viruses can only multiply within a suitable host cell. Viruses are essentially mere physical programs for their own reproduction in the form of a nucleic acid. They have neither an independent replication nor their own metabolism, penetrate into the host cell and couple to its metabolism. Since viruses or virions, unlike bacteria, are not cells, they cannot be killed like cells. It is only possible to prevent viral infection and virus multiplication.
