Prerequisite for learning the profession
In order to be able to learn the profession of anesthesia technical assistant, a secondary school leaving certificate or a higher educational qualification is required. A secondary school leaving certificate with completed vocational training is also sufficient to complete the training. In addition, the physical and mental health of the applicant is required.
Training to become an anesthetic assistant
The duration of the training is 3 years. The training ends with a practical, an oral and a theoretical test. It is completed partly in the vocational school and partly in practical assignments. Of the total of 4,600 hours of training, around 1,600 hours are devoted to the theoretical part. During the practical training, practical assignments take place in the following areas: abdominal surgery, traumatology, orthopaedics, gynecology and outpatient operations. The trainees have to complete 200 hours in 3 elective areas, here they can choose between neurosurgery, ENT, vascular surgery, jaw surgery, urology, eye surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery and anesthesia for children. In addition, the trainees have to complete internships in the areas of surgical nursing wards, ambulances/emergency rooms, surgical services, intensive care units, central sterilization, pain ambulances and endoscopy.

With the appropriate previous training, it is possible to study medicine after completing the training, for example to learn the profession of anesthesiologist. There are also further training opportunities that make it possible to work in a managerial position in the operating room or anesthesia area or in operating room management.
