The job requires a certain level of performance and, above all, the gift of being able to observe and evaluate people well. An important skill is being able to adapt to different tasks and situations and, above all, to people. It is also important to be able to make decisions and take responsibility for people.


A full-time training period of 2 to 3 years is prescribed. Part-time training is also possible, this usually lasts 3 to even 4 ½ years. The theoretical part is taught at school and learned and used in the respective educational institutions. Many tasks are worked out jointly in teams and prepared as projects. Facilities for disabled people provide the practical part. This includes curative education facilities, semi-inpatient and inpatient homes. There is also the possibility to complete the practical part in institutions abroad. As a rule, the internships are carried out in block form or on a daily basis. After the training, there is a one-year internship in a facility. A shortening of the training period is possible under certain pre-training conditions. In order to be allowed to start the training, intermediate education or equivalent previous training is required.

The Qualification

After the theoretical and practical part of the training, a final exam is taken. This examination is a prerequisite for the approval of a recognized internship. The exam requires a written and oral part as well as a practical exam. The health suitability for the training and a certificate of good conduct must be obtained before the start. In addition to knowledge of the job, further training, such as a first aid course, is required.

The training is usually carried out at different locations. After completing the training, the profession will be practiced in facilities for disabled people, hospitals or nursing homes. There are day care facilities or full care facilities for children, adults and also elderly people with disabilities. The industry areas are essentially municipalities, religious communities or social services. But the healthcare system and private households also need the professional group of curative education nurses. The curative education nurses are used in their free time in all imaginable places where you can do things with people. In the facilities themselves, these are the bedrooms and living rooms as well as the workshops and common rooms. The general work of the administration will take place in the respective office facilities.
